Abstract
Joe Louis's involvement in the 1940 campaign supporting Republican primary nominee Wendell Willkie is something of an enigma. Despite a political climate that favored the Democratic President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Louis became involved with the 1940 election and literally went on a campaign trail stumping for Willkie in New York, Chicago, and St. Louis.2 To add to the mystery, Louis's support of Willkie was in complete contradiction with his prior political history supporting Democratic candidates.
