Abstract
The position of the woman in Spanish society is ever-changing and hard to determine. Its elusiveness can be attributed to the recent tremendous change in the Spanish government. Spain was under the oppressive dictatorship of Francisco Franco from 1939 until his death in 1975. That same year, a constitutional monarchy was established, with Juan Carlos I appointed as leader. In 1982 the socialist party came to power and remains there today, in 1991. Release from the dictatorship was a catalyst for major changes in all aspects of society, changes which are still taking place, as the first generation raised exclusively during the monarchy of Juan Carlos I matures.
