Abstract
The world of athletics, on both amateur and professional levels, historically serves as a medium for social awareness, political battles, and societal advancement in the United States. Among the long list of participants, women , who at the turn of the twentieth century still faced numerous political, social, and gender obstacles, such as gender equality, the fight for enfranchisement, and bodily and sexual freedom. Sport in the early 20th century, especially on the public stage however, remained the dominant arena for white men rather than white women.
