Abstract
This study of the Walpole Society will address the following questions: what was the Walpole Society and who created it, when was it created and why, what role has the Walpole Society played at Historic Deerfield Inc, and has the society's link to prominent historic sites strengthened or undermined staff efforts to develop and implement a sound collecting policy? This analysis will show that the Walpole Society has been a mixed blessing for Historic Deerfield Inc and shaped the collection in intended and unintended ways. This study is based on Historic Deerfield's and Peter Spang's personal collection of Walpole Society notebooks and other records pertaining to this group of "gentlemen collectors."
