Abstract

The idea of writing about the Sonata for Trumpet in B-flat and Piano came to me as I was preparing to present my Senior Hearing to the brass faculty at Western Michigan University. Part of the work that the student is expected to do during this process is to research the composer and the work which he/she elects to play. In conversing with my applied trumpet instructor, Dr. Stephen G. Jones, I began to develop an awareness that the Hindemith composition was a work of major significance. As my interest sparked, I jumped at the opportunity to use this as the topic for my Senior Thesis in the Carl and Winifred Lee Honors College. In addition to the preparation of this paper, I presented some of my findings and ideas, along with a performance of the work in a lecture/recital on April 13,1997, in the Dalton Center Lecture Hall, Western Michigan University.
