Abstract
The aim of Word Weavers: Encore, my Honors College Thesis, was to conceptualize, create, write, stage, produce, and perform a two-hour, dynamic arts collaborative performance featuring the spoken word poetry of myself, Gabriel Giron, and Kirk Latimer, in collaboration with four other male artists specializing in music, vocals, dance, and drumming. The motivating theme and purpose of Word Weavers: Encore was to create an all male performance that would challenge many assumptions held about what it is to be masculine in today's society and to begin to break down some of the barriers men have to their own emotions. Additionally, we intended to expand the realm of spoken word poetry by creating a new genre we describe as spoken word theater. Performances ran over two weekends, January 25-26 and February 1-2, 2008, at the Wellspring Theater in the Epic Center of downtown Kalamazoo.
