Abstract
The design team, consisting of Matt Begeman, Ron Donkersloot, Brian Iskra, and Tim VanStraten, selected Zion Lutheran Church as the focus for its capstone project. Zion Lutheran Church is located at 2122 Bronson Boulevard in Kalamazoo, Michigan just southwest of the WWMT News 3 broadcasting facility (See Figure 1.1 for Map). The church has undergone several upgrades in the past including its most recent addition in 1962, but due to the expanding needs of the current church, an addition of 9,260 square feet will be added including a full basement. The main floor of this addition includes a large, dividable multi-purpose room, a food service area, a library and a storage room. The lower level addition will include a music room and a large nursery. Accompanying the new addition will be several renovations including office, a work room, roof and lobby upgrades, as well as bathroom remodels on both levels. A new heating, ventilating and air conditioning system will be installed in the sanctuary, along with a new fire suppression system throughout the entire church. A new vestibule will also be constructed equipped with an overhanging drive-through canopy. The current parking lot will also undergo a facelift by removing the existing asphalt and repaving the entire lot.
