Abstract
In order to increase the efficiency of columns in multi-story buildings, the cross section of the column's different portions is larger towards the fixed end where both the axial load and the bending moment is greatest. An exact solution was derived for the case of a three portion column loaded with three forces. This exact solution was extended to a five portion hinge-ended column. An energy method was used to obtain an approximate solution for the general case of a column made up of N portions with up to N applied forces.
