Abstract

It was going to be the best summer ever. I was going to the University of Haifa, to an ulpan with an excellent academic reputation to "fix" my Hebrew as I told my parents. I had terrible grammar, mixed my Hebrew with Yiddish and really needed to study academic Hebrew to prepare for grad school, not to mention complete my undergraduate language requirement. I was not only going to immerse myself in the language of my ancestors but also with my religion. In America, practicing anything but some form of Christianity is a struggle. I was ecstatic to have kosher restaurants on every corner, Shabbat elevators in my apartment buildings and surround myself with a Jewish majority.
