Abstract
The driving concept behind the Independence Theatre Company was that it would produce a season of well known shows which would guarantee it an audience, while then using its additional revenues and its large audience following to expose an audience to new and perhaps controversial types of theatre. Theatre that would otherwise not be produced for fear of driving away audiences. The Independence would allow both kinds of theatre to exist under one roof.
