Abstract
This paper details the process taken to create a children’s book that highlights concepts in the Michigan State Standards for Mathematics. The book was created based on research of the Common Core Standards, reviewing other children’s stories and related articles, and the feedback of other professionals in the education field. Topics for several stories were selected based on educational standards, specifically for first grade. Three stories were developed into storyboards, and a survey about them was given to eight teachers at a local Michigan elementary school, as well as two professors from Western Michigan University. Survey results indicated a strong preference for the story on number sense and a book prototype was developed. The book is intended for classroom and home use.
