Abstract
Art education is a highly valued, yet underappreciated, area within today’s school systems. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the exploration of the benefits of promoting literacy in the elementary art classroom and also ways to incorporate it. In researching this topic I have found that through integrating literacy into the art classroom students develop superior communication and visualization skills. By gaining these skills students benefit not only in their art making but in other aspects of their lives as well. Throughout my experiences while teaching the Saturday Morning Art program at Western Michigan University, I have included two lesson plans that I have created and taught that demonstrate how I have physically applied my research.
