Abstract

The Michigan Department of Transportation sought a proposal consisting of design and construction engineering services for the total bridge replacement of M-13 over Cheboyganing Creek. The M-13 Bridge Project is located on M-13 over Cheboyganing Creek on the Saginaw River in Portsmouth Township, Bay County, Michigan.

Several components of the existing bridge have been rated in poor or serious condition on the National Bridge Inventory rating scale. A total bridge replacement is required and aligns with MDOT strategies to address critical infrastructure needs in the state as well as the Bay Region's five-year plan for managing bridge and culvert infrastructure.

The proposed bridge will replace the 249.5 feet, three-span bridge with a three-span, 310 feet bridge. The added length eliminated the need for approaches while also moving the proposed support columns further out of the Cheboyganing Creek. Welded steel plate girders and prestressed concrete girders were compared on the basis of cost, service life, and sustainability. Prestressed concrete girders were favorable in all three categories and therefore used in the final proposed bridge design. A detailed cost estimate was calculated based on quantities derived from the design software. The estimated range of construction and demolition costs is from $3.9 million to $4.15 million. The duration of demolition and construction was estimated to be 121 days starting on August 1, 2017 and ending on January 23, 2018.
