Abstract
This project began with thorough readings of Suzanne Collins children’s book, Gregor the Overlander. Once familiar with the text, drafts of the adaptation were written with the guidance of Joan Herrington and Tucker Rafferty. Many major roadblocks hit along the way, including underdeveloped characters, a focus on plot instead of dramatic action, and an overreliance on the source material. By the time the play reached it’s fifth draft, most of those problems had been ironed out thanks to the help of Joan, Tucker, and many books/articles on playwriting. Few attended the performance of this piece, but the impact on the audience was noticeable. Jokes were enjoyed, sweet moments landed, and Gregor’s story was received. Ultimately, this piece will always have room to grow and it may still see further development in years to come.
