Abstract
Periscopes follows Molly, a struggling middle schooler with ADHD, and her parents. The entire family is at the end of their rope, exhausted by the day-to-day struggles of a twelve year old who can never seem to get it right. The trio clash on their different visions for building a better future, but by the end, much is constructed: a wooden boat, a cardboard house, a loving family, and a more secure child. This play investigates the emotional tolls of neurodiversity, rejecting the notion that ‘bad behavior’ is the hardest part of having or being a kid with ADHD.
