Abstract
My honors thesis was presented in the form of my senior clarinet recital. It was performed on Sunday, February 4th at 3pm. The music in this program consisted of unaccompanied solo repertoire such as Blush by Jean Ahn, and a Bach Cello Suite on bass clarinet. There will be accompanied works such as the Mozart Clarinet Concerto 1st movement, and Premiere Rhapsodie by Claude Debussy. Lastly, the recital will also contain chamber music, such as my clarinet quartet playing Histoire Du Tango by Astor Piazzola, and a vibraphone/clarinet duo called Oil & Water by Josh Gottry. This recital encompasses works from many periods and cultures. My goal of my senior recital was to present the clarinet in all of its forms, both through different auxiliary instruments and the setting of the music that is played. In addition to playing Bb clarinet, I also played A clarinet on Mozart, Eb clarinet in my quartet, and bass clarinet on Bach. This was important for me to include because my senior recital is an all encompassing presentation of my undergraduate experience. A big theme of my undergraduate studies has also been playing in a lot of different chamber ensembles, so it was important to me that I include various forms of chamber music in this recital, which were presented in the duo and the clarinet quartet. Clarinet is a very adaptable instrument, it can be performed in classical settings, chamber settings with interesting combinations, jazz, and other forms of music. This was very present in my senior recital, including works from classical era, baroque era, as well as Spanish/tango themes in the quartet, and east Asian musical themes in the piece by Jean Ahn. It represents the versatility of the clarinet, and pushed me as a musician to demonstrate these themes and styles in a convincing way.
