Abstract
In order to address the topic of food biotechnology and its ramifications to the farmer, processor, distributor, and consumer, one must define this new technology, review the background and history of its introduction, discuss today's products and tomorrow's market, and analyze the impact of consumer acceptance. In this paper the author provides two definitions of biotechnology; one for use among academics and medical professionals, and one more relevant to consumers. The author also reveals the beginnings of biotechnology as well as the background for why and how it was brought about. The author also delves into the benefits and risks associated with this new technology in great detail and describes the numerous food products already on the market.
