Abstract
Using calculators in the classroom is one method used by teachers to incorporate understanding int today's mathematics classroom, but is a highly debated topic. Even while the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has urged the use of calculators since 1974, teachers can still see them as a threat to students' basic skills. It is thought that the calculators will displace students' skills regarding mental arithmetic algorithms and so on. These tools, however, let students take ownership for the development of concepts, and it is amazing how much more students are engaged in discovering and understanding with the use of calculators.
In today's society technology plays a large part. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how calculators can be used to develop students' understanding of mathematical concepts.
