Abstract

The effects of poverty leave a striking impact on all aspects of the lives of those it touches. Poverty not only hinders the growth and well-being of those it strikes, but it also affects the growth and well-being of the economy. Poverty today affects our future tomorrow. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2005, 37 million people lived in poverty as defined by the U.S. government. Of these 37 million impoverished people, the highest group was children under the age of 18. This thesis explores the history of children in poverty, the causes of poverty, government issues, and how to help alleviate poverty in schools.
