Abstract
To suggest that firms behave responsibly - to partner with nonprofit agencies in efforts to better society - is certainly not a novel idea, though nonetheless important to countless poverty-stricken Americans. This paper introduces the concept of private-public partnerships and particularly focuses on the need for collaboration between the private and public sectors, while also examining corporate social initiatives as implemented by five major U.S. firms: Virgin Mobile USA, Whirlpool, Sara Lee, Kraft, and Wal-Mart. It further examines five factors deemed necessary for the success of such partnerships, and follows with a discussion of the many benefits that can stem from such pairings. Recommendations for moving forward conclude the study.
