Abstract
For some time now 1,4,7-triazacyclononane (TACN) has been known to be a very useful and versatile ligand. The conformation of the small macrocyclic, tridentate ligand is such that it occupies half of the bonding spots of an octahedral metal. because of this facial binding, it makes a good "capping" ligand and combines to form unusually stable complexes with first row transition metals. Unfortuantely, studies with this ligand are often hindered by its availability as it is tedius to prepare and expensive to buy. Proposed in this paper is a clean and easy preparation of the ligand using readily available reagents and simply laboratory equipment.
