Abstract
In 1987 the so-called Brundtland Commission, the World Commission on Environment and Development chaired by Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, defined sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (Theodoulou 208). The notion of sustainable development has since become a very popular one in the context of environmental policies. Numerous governments and industries around the world have entered the 21st Century embracing this idea by implementing and enforcing policies domestically and internationally that attempt to balance industrial and technological progress with environmental protection.
