Abstract

One of the most interesting pieces of legislation ever put forth by Congress is most definitely Title IX. This piece of legislation was part of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972, which were amendments to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Title IX is interesting because of the effects it has had on women, particularly in the realm of collegiate athletics. There have been some very interesting cases decided by the Supreme Court, and other lower courts, regarding Title IX. Here we will examine Title IX to see what the intent of the legislation was, how Title IX has been interpreted, and the effects of Title IX in relation to women and collegiate athletics. By examining these issues surrounding Title IX hopefully we can gain abetter understanding of the issues surrounding collegiate athletics and equal opportunities for the sexes.
