Abstract
To understand the current status of broadly protected speech, it is important to understand the history of the struggle for free speech, which ultimately led to the incorporation of hate speech within the First Amendment. In this paper, I will explore the history of the hate speech controversy, and the resulting positions American citizens secure regarding the debate.
