Abstract
In this thesis, I will examine two individual nationalist movements within the same country in order to compare them. Two regions of Spain, the Basque Country and Catalonia, have prominent nationalist movements. This thesis argues that they are very distinct in their history, structure, and goals. I argue that each movement has its own political goals and methods of operation. The development of two different nationalist movements under relatively similar political and economic conditions, such as the Basque Country and Catalonia, allows for the examination of the effectiveness of the different ideologies and methods of operation of these nationalist movements within a similar political context (Eley, 1996).
