Abstract
Religious architecture is found all around the world, with roughly 84% of the population identifying with a religious group, therefore, having a proper space to practice is essential.Having the right space to gather in community includes providing the appropriate architectural elements, which enhance one’s beliefs. While worship and faith practice can happen anywhere, religious architecture gives meaning, stability, and a place for purpose in one’s life, providing a safe gathering space for community members.
This research examines the human experience of faith practices and the architectural elements that aid in providing functionality to religious spaces. To understand the importance of religion and the significance it provides, one must have a basic understanding of what religion entails. The human need for external expression can be seen in spiritual cleansing and acknowledgment towards a higher power. There are vast differences of honoring a higher power, yet all with the commonality of showing gratitude, love, and the importance of community, connection, and external expression.
Compiled into this booklet are the basic fundamentals of beliefs, practices, and the overarching design elements associated with the five most prevalent religious groups. While there are an infinite number of religious groups in the world, with varying segments even within these groups - the information presented here are the basic concepts of beliefs and practices compiled based on literature review, field studies, precedent studies, and interviews.
