Abstract

Kenya’s elderly population is growing, but access to professional eldercare is still limited, especially in rural areas. Most retirement homes and care facilities are in urban centers, leaving many rural communities without reliable support for older adults. This capstone project focuses on designing an Outreach Center for Elder Support in rural Kenya to improve access to healthcare, community services, and social activities. The goal of this project is to create a safe, comfortable, and easy-to-use environment for older adults. The design uses human-centered principles with clear layouts, wide circulation paths, accessible restrooms, and comfortable seating. Spaces such as waiting areas, exam rooms, and support areas are organized to make movement through the building simple for both users and staff. The project also includes sustainable design strategies such as natural lighting, natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting, and outdoor areas that support small-scale farming and community activities. These features help create a healthier environment and encourage independence and participation for older adults. This project was inspired by my visits to Kenya and by my mother-in-law’s work at the Mumu Retirement Camp. During my visits, I saw the strong sense of community as well as the challenges many older adults face, including limited access to healthcare, water, electricity, and safe housing. These experiences motivated me to explore how thoughtful design can improve comfort, accessibility, and quality of life for aging individuals in rural communities.
