About This Journal
Prior to 2002, no professional journal existed at Western Michigan University catering exclusively to undergraduate writers and artists. Dr. John Martell was the first faculty advisor to oversee and launch The Laureate as an honors thesis project for the Lee Honors College. Since then, a new student each year has accepted the role of student editor, a yearlong process. From seeking submissions, to selecting quality work, to editing the journal, to working with student designers, to arranging a public reading and launch party, the student editor develops a great many skills that will prepare him or her well for a future in publishing. For the undergraduate students who develop the layout and design concept and aesthetic for the journal, they have an impressive professional product to include in their portfolios.
