This session, one of three that is sponsored by the Italian Art Society, explores civic foundation legends in the art of medieval and Renaissance Italy. The roundtable group includes one discussant and three respondents, and the audience will be invited to participate as well. The aim is to advance our understanding of the interrelation between civic identity and visual culture while exploring the complex sociopolitical circumstances underlying the manufacture and propagation of historical narratives. Questions of historiography and methodology will also be investigated.
