Description
This session interrogates material culture’s presence within romances. How do we—and how can we—think about “things”? Papers in this session challenge and rethink the function of material objects in romance, or shed new light on our understanding of romances by historically informed close studies of specific items or scenes. They explore the supposed exoticism of luxury imported foodstuffs, textiles and emblem making, the symbolism of knots and girdles. Texts covered include Sir Eglamore, Alliterative Morte Arthure, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
