This session will focus on the remarkable career of one of the greatest ecclesiastical and literary figures of thirteenth-century Castile. The speakers will deal with (1)`Jimenez de Rada’s importance as the Archbishop of Toledo, from which post he reconstituted several conquered and badly damaged Castilian bishoprics and served as a moving force in the construction of the great cathedral of Toledo, (2) his religious and military influence on the great reconquest battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212), and (3) the crucial role the Archbishop played as a Castilian historian with the publication of his masterwork De Rebus Hispaniae (Concerning Spanish Matters.
