Description
Rich readings of John Gower’s fourteenth-century poetry occur when manuscript illuminations are considered in dialectic with the poetry. As Russell Peck remarks, a manuscript image such as the picture of Amans kneeling to his confessor in many manuscripts of the Confessio Amantis “provides a visual meditation on the therapeutic ideal of reading the cultural ideology of Genius’ orderly narratives.” This session’s speakers offer new readings of Gower’s poems that arise from exchanges between poetic language and manuscript art. They will focus on the famous images of Gower the archer in manuscripts of the Vox Clamantis and of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream in manuscripts of the Confessio Amantis. Georgiana Donavin
