Abstract

This paper examines the social networks of Violant de Bar, who reigned as the queen of the Crown of Aragon from 1387–1396. During her reign, and in her prior role as the Duchess of Girona, Violant drew upon the social network she established in France during her childhood to increase the cultural diffusion of French music and literature throughout Iberia. As a medieval Iberian queen who took full advantage of the power of her lieutenancy, Violant’s troubadour patronage and book ownership significantly influenced the growth of Catalan humanism in the late fourteenth century. An analysis of Violant’s networks reveals the extent to which her power intertwined with that of her husband, King Joan I. By analyzing her reign using queer theory and recent advances in social network methodology, this study explores the potential for moving beyond individualized criteria for achievement and invites a more nuanced examination of medieval elites’ networks of power.
