All Books and Monographs by WMU Authors

The goal is to eventually record most books written or edited by Western Michigan University faculty, staff and students. We will start by entering the most recent publications first and work our way back to older books. There is a WMU Authors section in Waldo Library, where most of these books can be found. Most are available with another copy in the general stacks of Waldo or in the branch libraries.

With a few exceptions, we do not have the rights to put the full text of the book online, so there will be a link to a place where you can purchase the book.

If you are a WMU faculty or staff member and have a book you would like to include in this list, please contact wmu-scholarworks@wmich.edu

Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans

    Peter Abelard and Steven Cartwright

Peter Abelard wrote his Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans in the mid-1130s, toward the end of his life, while teaching in Paris. Filled with questions on topics such as redemption, grace, and original sin, the commentary demonstrates the growing interest of urban scholars in applying dialectic to the study of Sacred Scripture. Abelard's analysis of some of these topics contributed to his second condemnation at the Council of Sens in 1140. Despite its

An American Dream: The Life of an African American Soldier and POW Who Spent Twelve Years in Communist China

Clarence Adams, Della Adams, and Lewis Carlson

Throughout his life, Clarence Adams exhibited self-reliance, ambition, ingenuity, courage, and a commitment to learning--character traits often equated with the successful pursuit of the American Dream. Unfortunately, for an African American coming of age in the 1930s and 1940s, such attributes counted for little, especially in the South. Adams was a seventeen-year-old high school dropout in 1947 when he fled Memphis and the local police to join the U.S. Army. Three years later, after fighting

  • Hollywood and the Rise of Physical Culture by Heather Addison

Hollywood and the Rise of Physical Culture

    Heather Addison

This study examines the relationship between cinema and physical culture (i.e. activities such as dieting and muscle-building). Hollywood's long-standing prominence on the world state makes it an ideal place to begin such an examination. The evidence that emerges from a case study of Hollywood's impact on the American reducing craze of the 1920s, a physical culture fad whose chief focus was on shedding fat, will form the basis for speculation regarding the interrelationship of Hollywood

    Irregularity in Graphs

Akbar Ali, Gary Chartrand, and Ping Zhang

Die Theorie der regularen Graphen (The Theory of Regular Graphs), written by the Danish Mathematician Julius Petersen in 1891, is often considered the first strictly theoretical paper dealing with graphs. In the 130 years since then, regular graphs have been a common and popular area of study. While regular graphs are typically considered to be graphs whose vertices all have the same degree, a more general interpretation is that of graphs possessing some common characteristic

The general consensus among philosophers is that the use of torture is never justified. InTerrorism, Ticking Time-Bombs, and Torture, Fritz Allhoff demonstrates the weakness of the case against torture; while allowing that torture constitutes a moral wrong, he nevertheless argues that, in exceptional cases, it represents the lesser of two evils. Legal blogs exploded with analysis, bioethicists opined on our collective responsibilities, and philosophers tackled concepts like 'coercion' and the activity/inactivity distinction. This volume aims to bring together scholars from disparate fields to analyze various
