Abstract

Providing proper education on sexuality and intimacy is important for increasing comfort when addressing sex and intimacy with individuals in the professional field.  “Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. For sexual health to be attained and maintained, the sexual rights of all persons must be respected, protected and fulfilled” (WHO, 2006a). Creating occupational therapists (OTs) that are comfortable addressing this topic is extremely important for the OT profession to continue to maintain its holistic, client-centered care approach. Refraining from addressing it with individuals in the professional field impacts their ability to return to all desired occupations, which further diminishes the individual's quality of life. The purpose of this capstone was to increase comfort and knowledge addressing these occupations amongst OT Master’s (MOT) and Doctoral (OTD) programs, through an educational module and resources to refer to for independent continuation of education on this topic.
