Abstract
More than two-thirds of people living with dementia (PLWD) in the United States live at home and are cared for by family and friends, known as informal caregivers (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2024). Although dementia is highly prevalent, PLWD and caregivers often experience social stigma within their communities, contributing to reduced participation, loneliness, and isolation (Hung et al., 2021). Dementia-friendly initiatives aim to promote community engagement and inclusion; however, access to these initiatives remains limited, and there is little evidence regarding their effectiveness (World Dementia Council, n.d.). This capstone aimed to apply the frameworks of dementia-friendly initiatives and occupational therapy practice to develop and implement a dementia-friendly cinema program at a local theater. This included event promotion, staff and volunteer education, and environmental and activity modifications to support engagement and independence. Two screenings were hosted, and the program will continue monthly following the DCE. An IRB-approved research study was also initiated to examine informal caregivers’ experiences with dementia-friendly movie programs, as minimal evidence is available regarding their impact. This capstone contributes to occupational therapy by demonstrating the profession’s role in developing and leading dementia-friendly initiatives that promote participation and inclusion for PLWD and caregivers in community settings.
