Abstract
Freshwater Boys is a collection of sixteen short stories set in and around the Great Lakes of Michigan. The stories often focus on adolescent and pre-adolescent mates struggling to define and achieve what they consider manhood. At the same time, other stories depict grown men grasping at this very same idea. Faith, loss, and landscape all figure prominently in the collection. Rather than a compilation of coming-of-age tales, the works focus on what happens when youngboys and men fail to come of age and fail to achieve their masculine ideals.
