Abstract
In recent years, the history of women has become a recognized area of study. This topic includes not only the history of the women's suffrage movement, but of the development of the status of women throughout history. A part of this, then, is the status of women in Rome. Roman men allowed their women to rise to a status much higher than that of women in other ancient cultures. This paper is an examination of how that status came about, how women used and abused their "freedom," with special emphasis on the women of the first century A.D.
