Abstract

In 2003, just fewer than 706,000 legal immigrants were granted permanent citizenship in the United States. Of these immigrants, many had come from Mexico, India, the Philippines, China, and El Salvador (Meyers & Yau, 2004). As expected, the continuous wave of immigrants into the United States means that there is an ever increasing number of people who speak a language other than English - not only in our society at large, but also in our classrooms.
