Abstract
Working with The Evaluation Center at Western Michigan University, I, along with other research assistants, was responsible for the review of documentation sent by Michigan Charter schools, database entry based on key evaluation questions, and the creation of a document synthesizing our findings. I created the document "Innovations in Charter Schools: A Summary of Innovative or Unique Aspects of Michigan Charter Schools" as a supplement to the report entitled "An Evaluation of the Michigan Charter School Initiative: Performance, Accountability, and Impact" (Horn & Miron, 2000) and it was sent to the Michigan Department of Education. The innovations supplement was divided into three main areas of innovation: Curriculum, Instructional Practices, and Organization/Governance. This report "Characteristics of Michigan Charter Schools" will utilize the findings of the supplemental report with more analysis of the stated innovations, as well as some background information on the advent of charter schools in Michigan.
