Abstract
Agriculture has changed dramatically in its ten-thousand plus year history. Like so many other developments in the modern world, its rate of change as of late appears' to be more exponential than linear (pp. 33-34. Meadows and Meadows, 1972). The transition from a labor-intensive to an energy-intensive agriculture that has occurred since the turn of the century may prove as great as those changes that occurred since the initial domestication of wheat in the Middle East.
