Abstract
The Romany people have inspired this paper. Prior to 1982 the word "Gypsy" provided me with a range of images, from full-skirted dancing girls to treacherous, dirty rogues. In July of that year I found myself in a state campground surrounded by a group of "foreigners". So pervasive were the stereotypes created and perpetuated for me by my family, friends, and the media, that I did not recognize these "foreigners" as Gypsies; few, if any of us would have.
