Abstract
Even though much has been accomplished in writing the history of jazz music during the last 20 - 30 years, there remain many involved stories that need to be recorded; however, writing this history poses several intricate challenges for the historian. For example, the improvisations] nature of jazz lends itself to oral traditions in history, rather than fact-specific written documents. To me, a purely scientific approach to art, society and history in general seems to separate the human story from the event We should never study the Holocaust without reading about or listening to survivors; to simply study the acts of WWII desensitizes us to the human trauma of that time.
