Abstract
Throughout Ibsen's Rosmersholm the contrasts between progressive and conservative ideologies serve as the primary source of conflict between and within the characters. These struggles, both internal and external, are not only seen in the minds and voices of the characters, but also in the very structure of the Rosmersholm estate. The walls have sealed in the stagnant air of tradition but the inevitable winds of change gradually seep in, bringing new life and ideas that shake the Rosmer foundations.
