Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to define and discuss dissociation. This discussion includes an historical perspective of dissociation, an exploration of multiple personality disorder, and investigation of dissociation without multiple personality disorder, and an overview of normal personality theory as it relates to dissociation. Everyone is a dissociator. These techniques protect us from trauma and are used to escape from the real work. Simply put, dissociation is a process in which certain thoughts are split off from conscious awareness.
