Abstract
The following plan is a step-by-step guide to the response to a student's suicide or other traumatic death or incident. This plan was primarily written with high school students in mind, but can be adapted for use in middle and elementary schools. This plan is to be utilized as an immediate response to a crisis, which can be accompanied by the following: a rise in emotional energy, turmoil, and confusion, a disturbance in thinking and reasoning processes, and/or a disturbance in the way one perceives the environment. The plan reduces the chances of errors that can have disastrous consequences. It is designed to reduce the development of psychological distress by:
- providing opportunity for ventilation of emotions
- providing accurate information of the crisis event
- normalizing reactions
- empowering through effective management of crisis
- identifying, assessing, and referring students and staff quickly
- reducing unnecessary stress
