Abstract

To promote the library as an academic partner in cultivating cultural awareness and student engagement on campus, Western Michigan University Libraries celebrated National Poetry Month (NPM) in April of 2015. An event committee of three librarians and two staff members organized activities including readings, lectures, displays, interactive activities, and musical performance. The committee also implemented a survey designed to measure participants and audience reception of the event. The survey collected data on location of event, role of respondent, satisfaction of participation, intent to participate in coming years, and how they learned about the event. Responses were analyzed using both a descriptive statistical analysis and qualitative analysis of an open comment field. This paper discusses the planning, implementation, and assessment of events and how the knowledge gained from the survey will be used to plan future cultural activities.
