Abstract
In the past few years, transportation safety researchers have attempted to employ recent technological advances to enhance the services and safety of transportation systems. For example, several new technologies have been installed in new vehicles to alert drivers to hazardous conditions such as road constructions, pot holes, slippery roads, icy bridges, and slow traffic. Since traffic motion information can be used to enhance transportation systems, it has itself attracted significant research efforts. The objective of this work is to develop a motion estimation method that is suitable for traffic speed estimation and with real time implementation capabilities. This work investigates Radon Transform to estimate traffic motion from a sequence of highway images and examines the algorithm's sensitivity to noise. The algorithm is implemented and tested using synthetic and real videos.
