Chapter I
The Problem and Its Background
State and Local History Defined
State and local history may be considered relatively as geographical terms. In Europe, German history is state history. In the United Sates, Michigan history is local history. In Michigan, St. Joseph County history is local history. In St. Joseph County, the history of a village, township, or school district is local history. For the purposes of this study state history will refer to the history of Michigan. Also, in this study, local history will refer to the history of a county, township, village, or school district in this state.
