Abstract
This article proposes to identify some of the trouble spots in basal stories caused by the uses of vocabulary control and readability formula, the inherent features of commercial texts. Additionally, for a more effective employment of the basal reader, specific suggestions will be made that will enable teachers to help their young readers to construct meaning from stories that are less than perfect.
